Regulator with a graphics car heatsink?

I don't know much about electronics, hence the title so don't flame me!

I have a 5v regulator and it got VERY hot last time I wired it up so me thinks it's time for a heatsink. To save myself a long car trip, I was wondering if a graphics card heatsink would work if I drilled in to it and mounted it to my regulator?

well providing the base covers most of the regulator then sure it will work. I'm also assuming that your heatsink is big enough that it accommodate your regulator. So I'm not really sure what brand of heatsink you have and how big your regulator is so it's kinda hard to assume.
