If it uses the Google API then surely Google could (and probably have) slowed it down deliberately. I notice a definite speed decrease when using WikiMapia.

That would only happen if it was using Microsoft's Virtual Earth API. Come on, it's Google we're talking about here. Their motto is "Do No Evil".
