  Old  Google....logic

As my final year project i was being asked by my lecturers to develop a system that searches the server files and lists those files in page when on clicking will open the page. Basically a smaller scale version of Google is what i am looking forward to. i would like to know how Google searches these pages......however it is not connected to stored values in database. so since, it doesn't deal with any database its gotta search the files to get the result. I hope i am right! I would be glad if someone could help me with different stages of the project. Will using PHP for this purpose be suitable enough?? please advice!

Thanks in advance!

Google uses databases, it has petabytes of information in them. Its spiders go around the web, collect data and store it. Their exact methods are a business secret and are incredibly complex. Go for something smaller, this is equivalent to an aerospace engineering student wanting to build a smaller version of the international space station. There would be a chance if you already knew how to write web crawlers and such but if you have to ask at this basic of a level this project is beyond you.

Not to mention that Google makes hundreds of updates a year to their search engine algorithms (something like 3-4 daily).

Are you searching for files on a server or are you crawling web pages? That is not at all like a mini version of Google. Searching for files on a web server is far easier to do that crawling web pages. Such a task shouldnt be hard at all, just break down each step (searching, reading files, how to identify, ect) and take it step by step.

If it's a private server, and not as huge as my imagination tells me, I would make a script which goes file by file, and open then, recognize if there's an <html>, if so, fetch the title, if not, just the file name.

And get a portion of tha content anywhere randomly.
