Old  Would shortcut URLs affect your SEO?

Social media has the habit of making shortcut URLs for long URLs. I understand the rationale. But won't that affect your SEO ranking? I mean, any backlink is a "vote" for your site. But what if that backlilnk is a shortcut URL?

Do you mean Twitter? I can understand that Twitter users use shortened URL's in their tweets because Twitter limits the number of character in a tweet to 140 only.

The way I look at it is I don't think about it from seo point of view but just a way to get me the traffic or sales. I have used url shortners solely for the reason of gaining traffic via social media or elsewhere.
If it comes to seo I don't think I would use url shortners.

Yeah I also use it just to get traffic, as far as SEO goes using shortened ones probably isn't the best idea, but in the long run, the more links you have out there, short or not, the more you might get backlinks from elsewhere, as the more people see it. So it can be worth it.

  Old  No link juice

I just encountered a similar question in one of other forums a well.
The shortened URLs provide no SEO benefit at all. If you would just track the referral traffic from Google Analytics, they show up the shortened version only in the list of referrals and not the original ones. This further reinforces the fact. :-|

Thanks
Steve

These will not have any impact to your rankings for a specific keyword but backlink is still a backlink, so... At least that is my opinion.

I agree with you and the others, backlinks are still backlinks no matter how search engines values them. At least with the backlinks your website will gain more exposure and traffic.
