If you're really worried about overhead, there are plenty of alternatives to large libraries such as jquery.

The SACK library is a great one, and I've used it many times in the past; the entire thing, compressed and all, is about 2.5kb.

I dont use any libraries with AJAX I just do it myself, though since everyone else is using jquery I guess I should also look into it.
