Old  XP Blue Screen of Death

While working on my XP machine I got the BoD after a restart.

I keep getting this error...

C0000135 (unable to locate component

winsrv was not found
All the fixes I hear for this is doing a fresh OS install...Will doing this lose all of the data on my hard drive? If so, is there any other work around for this?

Try following

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885523

If you have a spare computer you can always throw all your important files on it and than reinstall windows.

If you have to format. Do you have another hard drive you could plug in?

If it wont startup, find another hard drive and install xp on there. then after that plug in your corrupted hdd and set to slave, then drag your files from this.

Best way to do it, formating your current one would get rid of evertyhing.
