It's not a contradiction, he is using web 2.0 as an example. He just worded it in an odd way.

Great web design is, in my opinion: excellent usability, great visuals, easy navigation (even easy for your 80 year old grandma), gets the point across immediately, loads super fast, highly accessible.

Thanks for all the input. Here are some of the points I have gathered from my research.

Objective: What is your objective to create the web site?
Usability: Website should be easy to use and navigate.
Loading: Loading speed should be as fast as possible.
Visuals: Text should be readable.
Info and content: Info and content should be easy to update and regular.
Look and feel: Layout and design should be presentable and feel comfortable.
Creativity: Concept should be Fresh and Orginal.

Is anyone agreed on that?

Great web design is something that fits the purpose of the website perfectly, caters to the target audience and is easy to use without any unneccessary jargon blotting up the pages.

very simple... if you really like something then it means "it is great!!!", that is the same, in case you find this design looking cool, then it is great for you (but that is not the question of technical part)

I agree completely with both of these statements. Excellent thread. Also, with the gathered research, I think you have it correct.

I've been going for 9 years now and SIMPLICITY is key. Frequently I have to battle clients that want every fizz and bang known to man, and the site looks great for a couple of months, and then gets old real fast. Simple, clean sites stay looking fresh for a much longer time than something that is 'over designed'.

http://www.webdesignerwall.com/

One of the nicest sites I've seen in a while It's beautiful.

Some good points raised though, but I'll be honest I'm more drawn in by the actual design But then I guess sometimes you have to tailor a design to suit the client so it's not up to you it's all about pleasing customers

A 'good' website for me is any website that is straightforward and to the point. A 'great' website is unpretentious and keeps things simple, otherwise I lose interest and leave the site.
