Karl,
I went through a year and a half of medical problems where I was forced to be in and out of testing centers, hospitals, doctors offices, just around home not allowed to leave the house. What else was there to do?
I also live in the Silicon Valley and started very young so I have a lot of encouragement and experience.
Regards,
Patrick Paul

Luckily, I'm much better Some day I'll take a picture of the stack of books I've acquired during my self-education. Currently it's at about 20,000 pages read so far.
Regards,
Patrick

That is quite some reading.
I have a few php books but have not picked up on it due to lack of dedication to learning it.

Karl

I don't think I've read one book for programming, I just learn from trial and error. Even though it'd help to research a few.

Refekt,
I took that approach to programming at first, but I found that my technique improved about 1,000x when I started reading books... It took my level of expertise from just throwing stuff together for a little script to being able to advertise my services. Now I can handle very very large projects and I code much more efficiently. I could have never picked up OOP with PHP without the aid of books and I am happy I did. Made the transiition to OOP Java and the C tree much easier. I find I even flock towards OOP when working Visual Basic

Patrick

Refekt,
Yeah, they use books, usually old books... I found my best reference materials to actually be spiral-bound books that companies such as Sun Microsystems gave out during lectures when they wanted to get their employees up to speed on a language or new technology very quickly. I currently have the complete course material for C/C++/Java/XML programming.

Patrick
