I think the lack of respect people have for even professional web designers stems from the fact that many of them havent yet grasped the true value of a good online presence. Many are not able to put a dollar value on the benefit of having one nor the cost of NOT having one. Many of them just jump on the 'website wagon' because everyone else in town is getting one, its not something they take particularly seriously unless their business is primarily/partially web-based. Yea sure, there are unprofessional web designers who have made it bad for the rest of us, but for the most part I think it has to do with ignorance on the part of some clients/potential clients.

I highly doubt a web designer is going to be assessed based on the payment method accepted.

Good point, but they won't listin =p It's bandwagon again on the opposing side. "Kids use paypal! So paypal must be kids!" "Kids use gloss! Gloss must be kids!" Just how most people's online opinions of designers go.

I have kids come and ask me to code a clan template for like $30 and design stuff and I say I charge a starting price of designing at $120 and a starting price of coding at $75.

P.S. Is $75 too much to charge for coding a site in valid xhtml & css

No $75 is still very cheap compared to other companies/freelancers out there. But you might find it hard getting people to pay those prices here on these forums as theres so many trying to make a quick bit of cash for less than that (including myself).

I hope this helps.
