Lets not forget one of the key elements of design is the use of space. If a person is given TOO MUCH space it will more often than not be used badly and if it is the design will look untidy. Plus like it's been mentioned it's not right to cut out 20% of all internet users just because you don't use their resolution. Don't forget YOU design for THEM they shouldn't have to change their res to view your site

I use 800x600. The topic starter just shows his immaturity level by starting such a trolling topic. I find 800x600 better for design purposes, it shows more detail in a design (in some aspects).

where do you get statistics on how much different resolutions are used?

27% of the worlds internet users still use that res, its mainly gamers..
I disagree. gamers mostly tend to have insanely high screen res. they only use 800x600 when inside a game.

When you are designing a site, its good practice to make it anywhere from 750-760px wide instead of the full 800px.

If you design the site to use the full 800px there will be no room for the vertical scroll bar, which will result in an additional horizontal scroll bar appeaing. Then things just look messy.

Really if you think about it, losing 30-40px width isnt that big of a deal and it will look a lot smoother if your page is going to have a large amount of content that will require scrolling.

cheers

I love the limitation personally, just all the more fun trying to make it right for resolution. Holding me back? Sorry but nothing holds me back...

its hard if you have such a huge monitor, :P I tend to design things big. and then adapt them into a smaller layout.

1920x1200 FTW!

I think its different with every site. I created sites using 800x600 but the design and content for those sites screamed for that. My own personal site needed more space then that so it was not created for the 800x600 monitors. When i look in my statistics i luckilly dont see a whole lot of 800x600 resolutions with my visitors.
