I'm a big fan of the Canon 40/50D for the price/performance ratio. At least, for higher end performance.

For actual price/performance any cheap P&S will destroy anything else. A 40D with a nice lens should ru n you about $1200 right now though.

I asked this question to a few people i knew who did photography on the side as a job and they told me to start with get a Nikon d40 , it may be expensive if you will but im willing to save the money. For christmas i got a Canon powershot a590 which takes really good pictures, i love taking sunset/rise alot and it serves its purpose.

yeah i may recommend you this kind of cam, its reliable
