Village Genius will become famous soon enough

The for dummies series is generally the worst out there. I havent read PHP for dummies but I have gone though about five others and they are all poorly written.

I learned from online tutorials (http://tizag.com and http://google.com) and PHP in Easy Steps. PHP in Easy Steps and tizag are responsible for most of my initial learning, but overall stuff found on google is responsible for about 99% of what I know.

Dont expect to learn how to program straight from a book. Programming can only be learned though practice and trial. While books and guides are an essential part of that, don't get too hung up on the particular book you choose.

Lastly, I recommend you read my article on asking effective questions, it will help a lot when you have trouble programming.

I agree with village genius, dummies books aren't very well written. I learned first through w3schools.com and tizag.com, but possibly the best way to learn is to look at pre-made scripts and then analyze them. If you don't know what something does, then look it up on php.net or the above websites. That's how you get the real XP...

I have PHP for dummies on my shelf and I do not recommend it, I would personally look into buying a couple of books

PHP:-
O'Reilly - Programming PHP 2nd ed (Good for begginers guides)
O'Reilly - PHP Cookbook 2nd ed (Handy for quick fixes or programming solutions)
PHP & MySQL for dummies, (not great but meh, its on the shelf)

MySQL:-
O'Reilly - MySQL Cookbook 2nd ed (Once again handy for problems, no good for general learning thou)
