That's the best thing you can do. You (anyone) shouldn't rely solely on provider's backup system. :)

i backup sql maybe twice a month
and i backup all the files like once every 2-3 months
cuz i've had some past hosts and had some bad experiences, but the host im on now hasnt had any problems yet. i'm thinking of switching to 1&1 though cuz they have some very nice and cheap plans (10gb, 500gb bw, only $5/mo)
anyone ever used 1&1 before? if so was it good like good speed, uptime, etc.

I do it like 1x a month. 1x a day or so would be impossible due to the nature of the sites I own.
@Shawon, I would highly reccomend you DO NOT go with 1and1. Go with a reputable company like Site5 or HostGator. I would not trust 1and1 with my sites; they've been part of way too many messes and mishaps.

well, i just have all my pages offline (create them offline in a folder, and then upload them, and keep the file in the folder). mysql databases, i don't backup. but again, that's only because losing my mysql data wouldn't be a disaster.

erm, download your site's files with an FTP, put everythign in a zip, and send it to your gmail account via attachements. Wouldn't know why you'd want to do that, you can upload them to a server too in a zip if you want to have a backup online.
