Prefer this to be online and i'm looking for a free client manager it would be a plus if it could pick up emails aswell.

You can sample Basecamp free for 30 days, and the lower tiers of payment (including a free option) aren't too extortionately priced. You could always bill clients a few dollars extra to cover the costs.

Never used activeCollab but if you are willing to shed a few dollars out I'd highly recommend Basecamp, great piece of software.

BaseCamp > activeCollab, but activeCollab is free and you can host it on your server, get themes, plugins, etc.

I use Basecamp, and I love it. You will eventually outgrow the free account. Right now I'm on the "Basic" account. Really recommend it, but it is costly.
