Old  What exactly is a VPS.

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me exactly what a Virtual Private Server (VPS) is. I was considering upgrading to one but I want to do some research etc. on them before I do.

Also where are some good places that offer them?

Thanks,
Nick.

A VPS is part of a dedicated server. A certain number of VPS's are hosted on one dedicated server. It is like installing mutiple operating systems on one computer. Splits the server into bits. Gives you root access to your part. Just like a dedicated server but sharing resources. A good place is www.eurovps.com

Think of it as a server within a server created with software. There's the host server, which is the hardware + operating system, then you load some VPS software on the host and it helps you create "virtual" systems on which you then load a new copy of an operating system, software tools, etc. and it looks just like you have a new server, except you're sharing the host's hardware.

Basically you're using shared hardware but you can manage and operate it as if it was your own dedicated server. It's usually a good option if you don't want to pay the higher prices for a dedicated server (if you don't need the extra power) but you will need to manage and modify apache / php or other web technologies.

Basically what the others have said, is the best way to explain it.

For some sites that experience really high load a dedicated server would be the best option.

But yes what's written above is correct. In addition before choosing a provider do research. This site provides good information and points things you should be looking out for.

I missed this part of the question!

I use eApps.com for my hosting and I have a few customers who use them as well. They have VPS hosting packages starting at $10/month and it's easy to shift to a higher bandwidth/higher rate once your site gets busier and your needs change. You can pay quarterly or yearly and get a discount off those rates as well. The part I like best is their customer support, because they won't leave you hanging if something in the OS goes off into the weeds; they take responsibility for anything they loaded on the server (even if you misconfigure it).

Just to add, VPS is usually only a temporary solution, once you feel youe needs have surpassed shared hosting, it's time to go for dedicated.
VPS providers to check are jaguarpc.com and
*********.com.
