Although this contest looks great, i don't believe that 175$ will get you a backend.

I dont like this. As you see the contest holder places a very low prize on the coding, infact an absurd prize for a backend. Even design is small. Since it will also have to implemented with the coding of the backend and frontend, not just a static html frontage which is really ridiculous for $125. The web design market really goes down because of young adults who take any money and compete. You get what you pay for

Wait do you want a free CMS like Joomla installed? If so then nvm coding ^^ .

Yes, we want a free CMS like Mambo or Joomla.

Although we are a new company and are very strapped for funds, what would be a realistic economical price for what is required?

A realistic price for a design on this forum would be anything between $150-$400.
There won't be many that can code a backend but with your specifications I'd say anything between $400-$800 is reasonable.

If you would hire a professional webdesign company you'd probably pay far more and probably not be any better off.

I would also suggest not asking the coding (backend) as part of a contest. It just wouldn't work out.

The Prize should be over $500 at least.
Seems like he's trying to get a great design for a cheap price.

I suggest getting a custom design created in this contest, save up and then buy a good backend.

You definately won't find a programmer willing to do a custom backend for you for $175. That being said, $125 is also fairly low for a design. Now I've never used Mambo or Joomla, but I have skinned PHPNuke and PostNuke, would they be as easy to skin? If so then $300 seems much more reasonable if all you want is a CMS skin (assuming Mambo and Joomla are as easy to skin as other CMS's).

On a lower budget this would be my honest advice to you:

Have this contest for the design only. $125-$150 will get you a nice design here at TalkFreelance. Then hire somebody from our offers & requests forum to code the design into a skin for an excisiting CMS that has everything you need and then use that (it will be much cheaper that way)

Although ultimately the choice is ofcourse yours to make

Yah, if you use mambo or joomla, it would be a lot cheaper. A custom one would be expensive (point I was trying to make beforehand) I agree with Bazza ^^
