11. Install mods for your forums that are neccessery.
Couldn't agree any less with that one. I hate going to those forums with currency and shops and rpg mods. They ruin a forum more, instead of helping it.

I think the best thing you can do for your forum is after you post 50-75 useful posts, put your site in your sig. It works, I have gotten some good traffic to squaredforums.net

You have to invest money into your forum if don't want it to be a drag in the beginning.

5. Make sure you cover all topics on your boards but don't create too many topics. Don't go over 20-25 different topics.
I hope you are talking about the main subjects you discuss, not the threads themlseves, since you need HUNDREDS of threads to make people want to join.

When I launch a new board I open 20-30 threads DAILY, or even more

As for the title: How to start a successful forum, you cannot start a succesful forum, you make it so All starting forums are empty and not appealing, but with effort we can make them successful Anyway .. great idea for the topic indeed.

Not true. A domain and hosting are a must, but outside of that, nothing is absolutely necessary. I can guarantee that there are people out there who did not invest a dime (outside of hosting) who are miles beyond those who spend hundreds of dollars on software, designs, advertising, contests, etc.

Now...does investing help your forums? Of course it does, it helps a whole lot...but to say that you must invest money to prevent being a drag in the beginning is not true. It's all a matter of time and dedication.

I haven't ran one on my own but with a team I have. I helped Zymic in his early years which was a pretty popular site then, I help create another designing community called leet-design (I didn't think up the name, I never liked that name) and it had a few hundrew members, and I just observe a lot of forums I visit which is a lot and just put my knowledge together. But nothing as big as this.
