i read on sitepoint where some guy was selling 01b.com and it somehow got onto min char for a domain name and someone posted x.com is for paypal.
a was never registered before the restriction i guess.

When I originally signed up for paypal it was called x.com. That would have been '97 or '98. This was long before they got in bed with EBay.
They had a deal where if you sign up you get $10 in your account. I was a starving college student at the time and I thought it was a good deal.
I don't remember exactly what year they became paypal. But they developed a brand name as x.com. I think they're schtick was that they were the largest online bank. Now they have the kid-friendly auction payment name, PayPal.
Btw, mildly unrelated. The greatest game ever ... X-COM.
