  Old  The spamming contributors?

I just set my Wordpress blog in such a way that a user can register as a contributor. Several users did register. But I suspect some of them are spammers, considering the nonsense user names and email addresses they use (you know, something like xnkddnz@ndlmc.com, etc.). I just wonder how they could register. Do you think they did it manually?

You can register by going to domain.com/wp-register.php on any WordPress blog (that allows registration). You more than likely have open registration right now.

Make sure you have some sort of anti-spam measures on your registrations, if you dont have a capacha you are open. I would also validate emails.

Also, an antispam thing called Akismet will help minimize or eliminate spam. Sometimes spammers try to sign up on my blog, but they never actually get in, thanks to this.

Thanks guys for the advice. I also want to validate emails but I don't see the option on Wordpress (is there any?). What happens now is that you will be sent an email informing your password after you register as a contributor on my blog.

Hi noboss, just my two cents worth here. I think that by opening up your Wordpress to register any contributor, you just made yourself vulnerable. It's a full time job (almost) to double check the email addresses.

The anti-spam feature of Wordpress is applicable only to comments, as far as I know. That feature is rendered useless once someone is considered an official contributor.

If I were you, I would stop accepting contributors automatically. Instead, I would invite people to email their contributions instead and I'd be the one to post them and introduce the authors as guests.

I would still invite contributors but on a more prudent manner. I would start with people I know and limit the number of contributors to just five.

I too agree with the fact that Akismet will help minimize or eliminate spamming form your website. You can also add registered user comment on your blog .

Thanks Mac, that's good advice. The problem is that my blog actually is an article directory, that's why currently I accept contributors on my blog. Anyway, I just visited the blog and you know what, I got 500 "authors" already. Can you imagine, 500 authors in 10 days! I will not be accepting new contributors temporarily.
