  Old  is coding still profitable?

Hey,

It's been a while since I coded anything for money, and I actually stopped because it was getting so cheap. Everyone offers coding for 20$, and I don't think that's worth my time. However, I'd like to make some money during this winter so I thought I should try relaunching xhtmlcode.com

Do you guys think it's worth the time?
Any of you still able to find clients that are willing to pay 'normal' prices to get something done?

I'm also a PHP/Java programmer, but I don't want to work on large projects because I'm still studying, so I'd like to stick to coding for a while longer.

Any thoughts?

I know as a designer as well many people charge extremely cheap prices at around $40-80 and it is irritating. But I also found that if you produce a quality service in the end you will be hired. I still get clients at the range of $300/per project whereas I've seen designers charge $80 for the same field of work. Don't be scared to charge your original price if it's worth it. Remember, in business you pay for what you get for.

So finally, I would suggest you set it all up again if you are dedicated and your quality of work is still upto standards.

I think if you establish yourself on the web and let your clients know the quality of your service they will be willing to pay a higher sum. Also don't go hunting for clients on cheap freelance job sites because over there usually the indian/pakistani/chinese guys end up winning the job because they charge REALLY low rates.

Marketing is KEY. The client needs to know that he is getting his moneys worth.

Also, without a doubt the quality of your work should be excellent, so if it isn't make sure that you update yourself by visiting the latest blogs and learn the new methods keep up with CSS3, html5, keep your code valid, use proper hovers etc etc etc...

Coding is worth it? Hell yes, I retain $500~ per job clients .

I still have a decent portfolio so that should help. I actually didn't think about CSS3 and html5 so thanks for pointing that out Fez. I'll have a look into those. (I havn't lost my 'touch' with the older versions though) Are those two the 'standards' now, or are they only for the people who want fancy effects?

Another question, and this might be a matter of personal preference, but what do you guys think, should I make it a portfolio or a "coding service"?
A portfolio is more personal, and some clients like that, but there are others who want it to sound professional..

No they are far from standardized but clients love to hear that terminology when they are approached with projects.

CSS3 especially is so fragmented that I almost hate it, but it is still good to be in the know.

I don't follow your second question... what is the difference between portfolio and coding service?

A 'service' vs a portfolio. Portfolio is more personal, the services usually also work with flat rates.

Ahh right, I get what you mean. I don't see why you can't have an entire portfolio including blog and everything as well as have a dedicated section for all of the services you offer. /seo /PsdtoHTML etc...

best of both worlds?

I guess it'll be something like that, but without the blog
