So what distrobution is a good'en. I liked the look of openSuse but wanted to know about say differences between gnome and kde and also end user experience. What would be better to run a ruby stack on?

http://distrowatch.com/ - Comprehensive guide on the Linux choices.

I personally like Kubuntu for a number of small reasons. I was a SuSe and Gnome fan until KDE4, since then I have gone to Kubuntu.

It's difficult to determine which distro is the best. However after many trials, I think opensuse works best for me.

You should download as many Live cds as you can from some various distros (Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, et al.) to just play around and see what you like.

When I first used Linux, that's what the first couple days comprised of--playing around with various distros to find one I liked the most.

Eventually I'd settle with Ubuntu.

I love Ubuntu. Apparently Fedora is the best bet at the moment though and is supposed to be the most user friendly.

ubuntu is the easiest and most user-friendly distrib , with a huge community and a lot of tutorial that could really ease your life as if you have a probleme , all you'll have to do will be to look on the wiki and follow instuctions

otherwise for the look the distrib doesn't really matter as lot of distrib are avalaible with several graphic aspect ( i don't know how you call gnome or Kde ?
