I actually want to know what types of opensource scripts I should create to kick off my portfolio and display.

Are you talking something like just a Secure MySQL Class, or are you talking something such as a Newsletter Management Script?

Instead of trying to think up a new idea and hope it's impressive; it may be alot easier to simply innovate an old idea by making it more effective, smaller, and faster.

Just my 2 bits.
