Not to make light of <Isurfr>'s post but here is a very qucik and easy way to make a favicon from any picture you have. Works instantly and the results are great. Best of all it's free.

I you can use .pngs for favicons, so you dont have to bother converting.

Although I bet IE has a problem with that, like everything else.
