I too have been a long time fan of AMD as they used to offer equal or better performance than Intel at a lower price. I have used exclusively AMD processors for over a decade and have owned the whole range from K5 to K8. Core 2 Duo though is just a superior processor to X2 and although AMD still has the price advantage it does not justify the performance difference. And judging from the reviews of the new Barcelona core (K10) it seems AMD will have a tough time competing with Intel in the desktop market performance wise.

Well, ATM the top of the line AMD (FX-62) Gets beaten by a mid range core 2 duo. Plus the AM2 mobo chipset is starting to get dated. On the other end, Intel are releasing crazy cheap Quad cores and brand new mobo's (P35 and X38) Which can completely smoke a x2. If you want a computer now, go get a Core 2 Duo but I would say and wait for the 45nm CPU's to come out in a few months or wait till AMD announce about their CPU's. The X2 will be better at some task (for example gaming) but still a Core 2 Duo will beat it since it has a whole lot more grunt. So If your gonna buy a x2 now, it's going to be a big waste of money in my opinion.

As Matsta says, wait for the 45nm CPU's, combined with DDR3 capability, sweeeeeeeet
Core 2 Duo (and even better Quad Cores) all the way baby, they absolutely blow AMD off the planet.

I own a x2 4200 amd and a 6600 quad core, and I would go with Intel, but it's a quad .

I always go with AMD because they are cheaper. Yes, Intels perform better, but it doesn't make much of a difference unless you have their newest models, if you are like me and stay 10 months behind it makes no difference. If you are going go get a good but not newest one, AMD, if you are going to be on the cutting edge of what came out yesterday, Intel.
