PHP manual gets boring.
I'm no expert, so i just bought a book on it and read most of it. Then it was a case of examining other peoples code and seeing what works and why, then beginning to write it myself using trial and error. The most valuable thing i learned was to write the code myself and not copy and paste, the knowledge sticks a lot easier and gives more of an understanding.

I dont know half of the stuff in that manual and I program at a professional level.

I learned allot by complicated projects that you only do the hard parts in (forums, cms's, ect.) then toss.

I read Sams Teach yourself PHP in 24 hours as well as the PHP reference manual (not cover to cover, but parts I was working with). Trial and error is my favourite way to learn, I hate theory.

Shouldn't you know CSS if you're a professional programmer?
