  Old  Meta Tags worthless?

I've heard recently that google doesn't actually base your position in their search engine on keywords as such but on the amount of relevent, high quality sites linking to yours.

If this is the case, are meta tags worthless? or is this just google?

They do base on metatags but links are more important. I'd say metatags are just to get your site going without links. When I searched funny videos into google I noticed the .co.uk at the top and then saw that all sites linking were using the term funny videos so I guess thats why.

Other search engines use metatags though so its best to have them, I know msn uses them.
Msn ranks more by the url though hence my subdomains.

Meta description and keyword tags are not as important as they once were. But I like to cover all the bases and put them into mine, and my clients, sites.

But they cannot read php code anyway as there not viewable, it outputs as html so I think .html is better.

Well to me it seems bs that google will throw all sites to the bottom just because of a .html extension. bbc are wrong imo but I will see like you said

Its a matter off modem web sites progressing into the likes of PHP. I may have not made it clear.. they are not coding them to the bottom of all php sites. ex. A HTML site and a PHP one with same SEO... the php would be on top - prob abit more complicated than that but its the main idea.

BBC right again
