Old  Difference between cash and accrual accounting method?

In regards to United States tax forms (Schedule C), it asks if the accounting method is "cash" or "accrual". What is the difference betweeen the two methods?

Here is a comprehensive article on the two types of accounting:

Normally, I would try to explain myself, me being an accounting student, but ironically I am in class and quite pressed for time. Hope that helps.

What opinions do you have about mark to market accounting? What opinions do you have about mark to market accounting? Do you think it is the reason for the current economic crisis? Do you think the process should be done away with, or do you think it is a policy that should be kept?

I don't quite understand the role of market to market accounting in terms of the current economic crisis. Could anyone explain it to me?
