Old  NEW TALKFREELANCE DESIGN - Feedback & suggestions wanted.

Most of you will have come across the thread asking you to pick the new TF design (here). It ran for a good while and mine was the favoured one so we are now looking to press ahead with finishing it off and getting it active.

The design can be found at the following link; http://www.talkfreelance.com/vote/chris/

What I'd like to hear is peoples feedback and criticism, along with any ideas / changes people would like to see to improve it.

Please keep any suggestions realistic and constructive, we'll take them all into account and hopefully with your input end up with a better overall and more polished product!

Cheers

I'm a huge fan Chris. Very nice job. Sorry if this has been asked before, but who will be doing the logo? I think it could make or break the design.

Cheers.

Once the design is near completion, the logo will be designed via contest through 99designs.

Also wanted to add that this thread will stay open for suggestion for 7-10 days. Chris will see what the general feedback is and then try to incorporate some of those ideas into the final design.

As I said before, I don't see the big benefit with the excess width. You're giving 15-25% (depending on your traffic data) of your visitors not only a scroll bar, but you're also cutting off a portion of 3/5 ad units for those users. All with no otherwise added value.

This is pickier, but I also don't fully understand the map lines. What do topographical maps have to do with freelance discussion?

I really like everything else about it though. The colors are awesome and the flow is very nice.

One other thing that I wanted to share with you so you keep it in mind when working on the profile page (Jamie's idea by the way). Let's make it more visual, and as such, each member can profile his/her own strengths/years of experience in certain areas (various coding languages, design software, SEO and other skills), so we can have beautiful looking bars (or another graphical element that you think is better) that would give a clear visual of member's expertise at one glance.

We can later on also feed member's iTrader, marketplace feedback score/listings, blog posts to the profile page, too. As well as their latest Tweets, links to LinkedIn, Facebook, TF portfolio, whatever it is we build. Think bigger on it, with the underlying tone of keeping a profile page a professional representation of the member.

Cheers.

  • Two search inputs on one page is confusing and takes up unneeded real-estate.
  • Most icons have no visual representation of their meaning. There is a solid reason why clued-designers don't use them this way.
  • Featured and unread tabs are coloured and stand out above content and w/e else is deemed important. Why?
  • I'd move site-wide announcements above the navigation. Better highlighted, eye-positioning etcs.

Chris, the design looks great. Here are my suggestions:

1.) The ad spot needs to go. I use Google Ad Blocker so that's just going to be a huge empty space anyways. A lot of people are going to have this same issue.

2.) The width of the design is gigantic, IMO. Why not break it down to the standard 960px? No one has a problem with that.

3.) It represents the current TFL in no way at all. At the very least, incorporate some current colors.

I'll add more if I can think of them.

Losing these colors is one of the things I am most looking forward to. I absolutely hate the current design, I think it is among the worst designs I've ever seen on a forum (I've seen worse, but none of them were implemented). I see no reason to keep the current TF colors, they aren't even the original ones anyways.
