  Old  Website width, what do you use?

Hi there,

I was thinking about making a blog post about this, but no one would ever read it, so i thought it would be easier/quicker to ask here.

What size to you like to design in? Usually i design my templates in 780px wide, by whatever is needed in length. I use 780px because it accommodates for most screen resolutions. Although most people use 1024x768, there are still people using 800px * 600px, so I find it best to design for everyone.

Now, when looking around I see more and more websites with large widths, 900-1000+px, I’m starting to like these websites more and more, but I’m wondering if it’s wise to start designing using these dimensions.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks

PS: Wasn't sure what section this belonged under, so i put it here, sorry if it's in the wrong section

I usually use 780, or 900 + depends on if its a fixed or fluid website.

My standard photoshop document is;

1100x2000 Pixels.

Just take a look at the Web design category next time.

I use a canvas of 860*650 for reasons that it fits my laptop's 1280x800 screen resolution well and allows me to cater to 800x600 users as well.

In the last 3 years I've made two sites that didn't fit within an 800*600 window.

I use a canvas of 1000 in photoshop but the actual content area of the site tends to be inbetween 600 and 700 pixels

I had been doing 100% or 780px for the last years. Lately, I design for 1024 since it is the 'standard' resolution...

I try to make fluid designs so that they fit well for all resolutions. However I have been doing a few static widths lately, from around 800px to 1000px.
