Consultancy - What's it worth?
Hey Guys,
I see more and more companies offering consultancy as a service lately. Both on and offline. I was just curious to know what it's real value is? I'm confident enough about it to say it can be measured per hour, minute, or along a certain period of time.
If anybody offers this as a service, or for free. I'd love to have more information.
Thanks!

I give all my clients free 1 hour consultations regardless of whether they buy from me or not.

Anthony, depends on your field. One of my older brothers (who ranks higher than me on google if you search for my name) runs a consulting business for .NET applications and he has on occasion earned anything to to £400/hr for his services. A more regular and generic rate to charge would be a usual freelance rate of something around £30-50/hr but it all really depends on how specialised the consultation is that you're providing. And yes, per-hour is generally the way to go.

In person without a doubt, I don't think you can do real consulting across the phone or IM for that matter. You can make alot of money through this service though, I know people who make several hundred pounds in a day! Also, it's good to offer a free consultation service as a way to attract potential clients.

I'd say I already offer 'consultation' to an extent, in most cases it's a case of they want done what they say and aren't really open to suggestion.
Thanks for the tips in regards to 'in person consultation'

The single best way to consult is to be there in person to speak to the client face-to-face. However, in fields such as you're interested in Anthony (web design) your clients can often come from anywhere in the world.
Personally I would steer clear from using IM programs (AIM, MSN, et al.) but there is nothing wrong at all with speaking to the person over the phone (or computer-based telephony). Phone conversations take place in real time, and you're talking to a real person which is something IM programs tend to abstract.
Do you want to spend 4 hours travelling to talk to a client for an hour, or just get a call from them? (Depends if they'd pay for the private jet and hotel )

Depends where the client lives and how much they'd be willing to pay me for the trip
