Old  Where Can I Learn The Principals of Design?

I know the ins and outs of photoshop, but my designs still look like crap. Anyone know of any places on the web (free or paid) where I can learn about the principals of graphic design? And don't say lynda.com because I have a subscription and they barely have anything of this subject.

Have you checked out the offerings at Pratt, Parsons, SVA, Cooper Union, CUNY -- the first 4 each a school in your town with an international reputation for their art/design programs? There may be online opportunities, or you might just have to put on your shoes and socks (;^) and sit in a classroom for an hour or two on a weekend.

You should pick up a book on web design. Make sure it's relatively new though.
I recommend this book: http://www.amazon.com/The-Principles...ful+web+design

It explains some good guidelines for structuring layout, choosing colors, texture, typography and use of images in a very non-technical language.

If you don't want to buy a book, you can read some great articles at A List Apart.

Actually, you can take the kinds of courses I meant, as they're offered through the continuing ed programs at the schools I mentioned.

I assume you don't have the time or subject-level commitment--or need--to do a credit level course, nevermind the credentials to get in to one without doing so through your high school.

It's would only be through the exploration of various designs that you'd learn what would work and what wouldn't. Practice and let other critique your works.
