So I woke up this morning and discovered that somehow, I had "lost" about 160gb of space on my hard drive. I had about 198gb of free space on my drive and now, it is only showing 29gb of space. I know that I have not downloaded anything that large (that'd be a feat...) and when I restarted, the same thing showed. I ran a quick check on the disk and can't find any errors. I also did a search for all files that have been created/modified in the last few days and couldn't find anything that could possibly taken up so much space. Is it possible that my drive is dying? My computer is newly built and my primary hard drive is only about 4 months old...
try getting a partioning program to see if its hidden, thats what it sounds like. It hapepneed to me a while back where somehow the space was hidden, there but hidden, never found out why
This could possible be in a program that you downloaded that partitioned your hard drive like greg was mentioning. Also, what type of drive is it SATA IDE?
yeah, get acronis disk director, and check out the partitions.
Chances are the 160GB is now just unallocated space, then you just need to resize your partition back to normal.
Did you un-plug the HDD while the hdd actually was running and online ? Pretty rare that this happends if you unplug the hdd, but at some points this kind if issue can be caused by un-plugging the HDD drive when its on!
The other day something a little similar happened: on my Macbook I noticed that I only had 2GB of free space randomly. After about half an hour of searching I discovered a file called "last.fm log" deep within the depths of my /Library folder, and it was 15GB. No idea why that suddenly appeared because it was never there before.
