  Old  1024x800 the new standard?

For a long time now the standard for designing web sites have been to make them look ok in 800x600 and up; is that standard still valid?

Do you think that it's ok to design sites with a minimum res requirement of 1024x800 (800x600 users can scroll side ways if needed) or should the 800x600 still stick?

Ofcourse it does matter what type of site you are designing - I am considering switching my flowing layout on my ranking sites (www.hardwareranking.com) to a fixed 1024 width... what's your thoughts on this?

1024*768 is alot more comman now and is what the majority of people use but it's so easy to keep a site within the 800*600 and as there are still people using that resolution it's easy enough to accomodate them in my opinion

Check your site stats if no one (or practically) no one visitng your site is using 800*600 then by all means make it 1024 wide but if there are still people using 800*600 then don't cut them out.

I try to make my websites viewable in each resolution, whether its fixed width or not..

But i'd like to punch the person that's still on 800x600, (can't stand it) hehe.

Don't something like 30% of internet users still use 800*600 though? seems like a large proportion to be missing out when it's so easy to cater for them.

Although in the end i guess it depends on what your target audiance is. If it's something for 'computer literate' people (which in your case it is) then i doubt many, if any, will be using 800*600. If it was something more general, however, i think it would be a bad choice to make.

thats what I am saying - a 1024x800 works on any resolution 1024x800 and higher; why should you limit layouts to the lowest denominator?

www.tomshardware.com and www.cnet.com doesn't and they get a good 40k+ uniques a day I am sure.
