  Old  Advice: Want to learn a new language.

Hello,

I want to learn an application programming language. What I mean is I want to be able to program an executable file that runs on a computer. Any advice to which language I should pursue? Also how should I go about doing this?

Book suggestions?

Thanks guys.

Visual Basic.

By far the easiest, mainly runs off of words.

As far as books go i'd recommend Wrox programmer to programmer. They arent as expensive as some and have useable examples.

I thought C++, C# was the future?

Btw do you have any knowledge of other languages, if so which ones?

I have some experience with PHP. I used to mess around with DARKBasic and I'm messing around with Python now.

Thanks.

Apparently C++ is meant to be similar in syntax to PHP, so you might be able to grasp the basics of it pretty quickly.

Depends what the executable is going to do... My very strong advice is to learn C. Everyone thinks that C is deprecated and useless, but it is the foundation of all programming languages and is the most powerful Unix language of choice. Many big name companies are hiring with specific requirements of a knowledge of programming C.

However, if you want to start developing Windows GUI I would go with Visual Basic. It isn't all that powerful (although the .NET framework helped this a great deal), and is considered by many to be a "wussy way out" but it can get the job done quickly.

Regards,
Patrick
