Blogging tends to be more profitable. Build a base of loyal readers and you will actually have a community within your blog. Once that is set, start a forum as well. Once you have a forum you might even get people to write articles for you for free.

It's also easier to get traffic to blogs. Make sure you use the seo-title-tag mod.

Try doing both. You should probably start off with a blog first then add a forum for people to discuss your topic. It really brings everyone together.

Blogging is the way I probably should have gone too 3 years ago when I started. I have found community forums fairly easy to populate if you are willing to post a lot of useful information for niche markets.

Offering access to free stuff in exchange for member registration never hurts to get things going too if you plan on cultivating a newsletter, selling intangible goods, etc.
