I use Maya Autodesk 9. It's relatively same as 3d max studio but made specifically for modeling and not really animating. Really easy to understand.

Cinema 4D, I'd say... but man is it complicated at first. I gave up after a while to be honest.

3DS Max seems to be more powerful and also have a more active community than Cinema 4D, however on the other hand Cinema 4D has a nicer UI to new modelers.

One thing to remember is that you don't really want to learn an application, and rather learn the basic 3D modeling techniques. Maybe you could start off playing in Cinema 4D then move onto 3DS Max.

Hope this helps,
Adam

I am using 3D Studio Max (once a year =) ... after few tutorials you can get into it...

But I remember that when I was about 13 me and my friends we played with some aplication called 3D "something" and it was part of Corel package (dont remember name of it).

That was realy good and simple but I think they don't offer this application anymore.

And Bryce 3D was simple ... mainly on terrains but could do anything with it..

If you're new, 3d Max is for you, after that, you can try Maya
