To be a good designer/coder, it takes a while, you really need to get the basics of all the programs youd use, like photoshop dreamweaver flash and all that good stuff before you try to make some websites.

Then you should find a feel for the styles of webdesign that are out there and try to add your own taste to it.

I learned by going through tutorials from pixel2life.com of just basics.

There is no need to go to art school. I know some of the greatest designers that have learned it by doing it.

Practice makes art, and some people already have a great feeling for design and some don't.

Start designing and keep doing it

Maybe try and reproduce elements from other sites and get a feel for how it's done. Then apply similar techniques when it comes to creating your own design. Also, just stick at it. If your not happy with your design, step back and think to yourself how could I improve it? Possibly change the navigation? The typography? Criticism from others can be a big help

It is a skill that you need to hone. Try to experiment and practice.

Most of your resources are right here on the web.
I find these two to be the most help for design ideas/how-tos:

Keep looking at other peoples designs and learn. Your first 25 designs will be really ugly but don't worry it gets better in time.

Creativity is a natural thing. You have it or don't have it. You can get better at it but you can't learn it. It'll come to you if you're around long enough (naturally) or you'll just have to work it to get better.

Honestly, inspirational designs don't help me much. I might use them to learn the latest trends but you need to be self motivated... self-inspired to do this sort of thing. What you can do now, is be patient with design. Let it come to you.

Keep learning things in photoshop or whatever but be patient with being an incredible designer. Don't follow all the trends... pick up your own style.

Good luck!

Luke
