Imo it`s not a must to be both but it`s good to know at least basics about code if you are designer. Knowing how to code, makes project also more coding-friendly while creating as you know how specific element will will need to be put into code.

Since they are so related, maybe there are things to know about design that would make you a better developer, and vice versa. Or things you can do as a developer that would make it easier for a designer.

First of all, there is a prejudice that web programmers (developers) are design illiterate, which may be more true than you think, at least from my experience with developers. But these two jobs are heavily intertwined where if you know one learning the other requires far less time than starting from scratch.

i think its both time consuming to be great in it... you cant be the best in 2 things at same time... but can be good... just not the best...
