Old  Complications en route to new forum release.

Greetings all,

While we were able to accomplish almost all the items on the to-do for this year, for the past couple of weeks we found ourselves stuck on perhaps the most creative step - development of a new skin. The problem is not that we do not know what we want built - a relatively solid plan has been laid out weeks ago. The complication is that a freelance designer that I have been waiting for has postponed the possible start of work for 2-3 more months, partially due to my fault of not getting back to him quick enough to confirm the start of work, as I was still shopping around.

Prior to making my final decision to go with this particular designer I am talking about, we received few graphical concepts from 4 other designers over the course of last few weeks. I believe all of them are TF members as well.

Now that the lead choice designer is pushing his schedule forward by 3 months, and considering that it takes months to produce a final product, code it and integrate other content areas and features, we will not see a new skin before the beginning of next year (although the priority was to release something fresh and awesome by this coming Christmas).

So I am coming to you, the community, for your suggestions on the matter. Should we wait or pick someone everyone loves and respects to design the new TalkFreelance skin without major delay? If so, how do you see the nominations/recommendations go forward? From a creative perspective, the project we are envisioning is not simple by any means, and requires someone who has high-end design experience, ability to think outside the box and a portfolio to prove it.

Looking forward to any sensible ideas and suggestions.

I think the decision to delay or choose another designer should be largely dependant on the general consensus concerning the designs that have been pitched. It may be that one of the 4 other options is considered superior to your choice by the community.

That said, despite this being a community, you are the one paying for it so it's not unreasonable to expect you to have the final say on which one is chosen.

Hard to say yes or no to wait when you have not disclosed who the designer you have so much praise for is. Could you please link us to his/her portfolio?

The final decision is yours as your the one spending the money, but there are many competent designers out there.

Based off of not disclosing the designer you were going with, I opt to suggest James who is/was a member here and the work he's been doing this year.. Fantastic.

Although I'd be more inclined to have a better response pending you actually showed that it might be worth waiting for this artist you've contacted. Without that, I say find someone else.

I wouldn't hire a member from here (unless it was n-design studio), hire someone who can produce really top notch work who isn't necessarily a vB designer. In the end though it all comes down to the budget, if you really want to take it the design to that next level it's obviously not going to be cheap.

The designer I have been waiting for is Lucian from http://www.emblematiq.com I worked with him once before (he designed HostingDiscussion.com) and I think, his CMS interface skills are fantastic. Every time I snoop around, I find myself drawn to his work: http://www.emblematiq.com/portfolio/complete/
I also contacted www.builtbybuffalo.com and www.jasonsantamaria.com. The Buffalo team is extremely expensive, and Jason was completely booked.

I very much agree that I would rather have an active member of TalkFreelance design the new site. I approached 4 members to design their concepts (not a finished product!) based on a brief website profiler.

Different approaches, different styles. Now that you have an idea of where we are, it would probably be easier to comment.

@Jordan: I just sent James an email as well.

Oh, that is a tough one. The emblematique portfolio is quite nice, but I'm not sure if it's worth waiting 3 months for. If I were in your shoes, I suppose I would wait and work on other features for the website during that time.

Artashes, you should look at your very own Daniel Hellier, Dan the green man @TFL.

http://www.danielhellier.com

Most of his work looks good and I think he meets the "respectable and lovable" semi-requirements.

Plus he's good looking too .

Oh and I'd like to wish GOODLUCK to the poor soul that gets the task of coding for vB 4.0 (if you guys are upgrading) hell even vB 3.X is a messed up job -_-.

I'd say wait. Nobody is better than the guy you're wanting to wait for.

Honestly, wait. It will be worth it.
