Old  How to get PHP5 and phpMyAdmin 2.8.x.x running on Apache 2.0.55

I have been having some trouble getting phpMyAdmin set up and running with PHP5. I've set up Apache web server, MySQL 5 Server, PHP5 all succesfully. I'm running phpMyAdmin from behind the website root directory, and using mod_alias (from Apache) to run it. When trying to run pMA it gives an error that it cannot load a file and that I should check my php.ini configuration. But I have configured it to work with pMA and still no luck. Mabye there is something else I have to download for it to work properly? I'm really stumped on this, if anyone could help me it would be much appreciated.

(This problem has only occured with PHP5/phpMyAdmin 2.8.xx but not with PHP4/phpMyAdmin 2.7.xx. I could switch back but I would rather run PHP5.)

Thanks again to anyone that can help my predicament.
