  Old  Perl still being used?

I remember a few years ago before php became all the rage, perl/cgi was the language to learn, does anyone still code in this? Is it a language that no longer has a real use or do you think it is still accepted?

I know quite a few people that have made full CMS using perl scripts, so I think it still has a real use, and is still accepted.

There are still lots of Perl developers out there though it has been eclipsed by the rise of PHP. Even last week I had to resort to using Perl for a project of mine which PHP just can't handle (at least without modification of PHP's internal code), it was a compromise but at least it worked.

Sounds interesting, what was the particular function that php was unable to do?

That's a secret until when (or if) I get the project up and running fully.

Perl is still heavily in use. The benefits of perl are a few fast modules which allow you to fetch results faster than by using PHP. Search applications for example are faster if you use perl (especially flat file databases).

Example Results:

Benchmarks "Exact phrase Search"
PHP = 0.4630
CGI (Perl) = 0.0160

PHP is much easier for begining programmers to learn. That is why PHP is rising so rapidly. There are a few things that PHP can't do that Perl can, but that gap is rapidly closing. I wouldn't be suprised if Perl is gone in a few years.

i doubt Perl will ever be "gone"
PHP is an awesome language but because of it's nature, Perl will always be faster at it at certain things. Perl is definitely more powerful than PHP at SOME things at the moment.
but at the same time, Perl can be too powerful sometimes, overkill even, so PHP would be needed in such cases.

I spoke in wrong terms. No programming language is really ever gone. Take Fortran for example, not gone but not used nearly as much as it once was.
