legal question

I'm thinking about taking on some freelance work. I currently work for a web design company that does mostly local websites. Is this a conflict of interest if I take on projects that aren't local companies?

Do you have a contract? Would taking on additional work be in violation of that contract? If the answer of either of those is no, then there is no conflict.
