Need feedback on a couple website ideas.

#1 - YouTube video download site

I was thinking about the millions of people who visit the site and are limited to watching the videos on their computer. How cool would it be if you could bring those videos with you on your ipod (or other mp4/wmv player ).

I could offer a service where users visit the site fill out a form containing the url to the video and desired video codec along with their email address. Then the video would be downloaded by myself, converted, and uploaded to my server where they could download it and put it on their ipod.

#2 - Website search engine position tool

I googled that term and found no results for a tool that would tell people what position they were in search engines like Yahoo, Google, MSN, etc.

I would create a php script to do this.

I like the first idea, but best automate it, for your own sake.

#1 might have some serious copyright issues. You'd be duplicating copyrighted work without permission for profit. At least I assume you want to make money. Which brings us to my question: how are you going to make money?

#2 I think you're on safer ground with this one but I'd still talk to a lawyer. Nice thing about #2 is that you've got a revenue stream with on-line ads. People who worry about their search ranking and people who claim to be able to improve their client's search ranking might want to use a service like what you've sketched out.

Seeing as he is 14, I doubt he could hire/afford a lawyer.

There are already hundreds of sites like idea no.1. Youtube has an inbuilt download function already.

There are already options for #1, as for #2 well, there are pagerank checkers for google :P

Yeah I have had a lot of people saying that idea #1 might be dangerous. However I am not selling any videos, I am selling the service that downloads the videos and uploads them.

- I suppose that kinda describes what I am doing

Regarding number two I havn't seen many tools like what I described but i'll take your word that there are many.
