  Old  WYSIWYG or not? (HTML)

I have preferred to code by hand most of the time, especially since WYSIWYG tends to bloat the code so much. My husband prefers RVSiteBuilder (which is WYSIWYG). What do you prefer?

The day I find out a coder I hired uses a WYSIWIG is the day I fire my coder. Hand.

I used to prefer WYSIWYG as it was so convenient for a beginner but the more I got underneath the surface the more I preferred actual html. Once youre familar with the code things become a lot cleaner and safer. Because on the WYSIWYG end a lot of erroneous or superfluous html can slip in without you being able to see it. Its even worse when you paste in stuff from other text editors, like MS Word. At least people should sift through the html once they're done in WYSIWYG.

Glad to see I found a place where the people think like me! There is nothing so annoying as a WYSIWYG when trying to lay out a site. I have a customer who is using RVSiteBuilder and asked me to remove something, and I can't find WHERE RVSiteBuilder has it, so I can't remove it! I could easily remove it if I was working with his code directly.

I'd say a vast majority of experienced developers code by hand--it's not really that uncommon or unique. Only novices will use WYSIWYG.

If I do any coding I use the split view in Dreamweaver. While I work only in the source code, it's nice to see a live update of the page.

A coder may, and should use tools to automate his tasks, but WYSIWYG "all-in-one" editors are pathetic toys, nothing more.

Soon, when IE9 will replace IE8, and we will finally have interoperable browsers - new versions of industrial software, like Illustrator or InDesign, will probably start to generate satisfactory code, but until then - all this work must be done by hand.
