Old  What exactly is graphic designing?

What is the difference between graphic designing for ads and graphic designing for movies and television? I want to do graphic designing for movies. Also what kind of classes do I have to take to do it?

  Old  Graphic Designing

Graphic Design is the process of visual communication. This usually refers to the use of typography, page layout, and visual art. A graphic designer uses his or her skills to create the visual appeal of magazines, web pages, presentations, packages, posters, merchandise, and anything else that may require visual aid.

For film, a graphic designer would most likely be responsible for opening title sequences and the end credits. Also, they would use graphic designers for any merchandising, i.e.; posters, websites, etc.

The best graphic designers have a very keen eye for details. The truth is, many of the best designers went to the best schools. Rhode Island School of Design, School of Visual Arts, Parsons, Tisch School of the Arts, Savannah College or Art and Design are some the top art schools that have a large focus on the commercial arts.

Among the things you can help yourself with before you go to design school are:

Color Theory
Typography
Composition
Drawing
Basic design programs (Photoshop, Illustrator, In Design, Quark)

Try to start learning those ASAP to give yourself a head start. You can find color theory and typography books in a library or a good book store. There are many places where you can take basic drawing and composition classes or workshops in your area (where are you anyway?).

This is something you NEED to have a degree in to be successful. So study hard, it's not an easy course of study or career.

as far as the word graphic design goes, there isn't any. as pointed out above, graphic design is the creation of communication from a medium to an audience through the creation and strategic use of line art, form, contrast, shadow, typography, colour, etc.

the technical skills are what separate them. film/television is primarily going to be motion based, where print design requires a lot of pre-press & printing technology knowledge.

but design is design. whether you're designing (directing) the movie trailer, designing the web site or the poster (or 3d backdrop/cutout) that you see at the theater the same rules of design theory apply to all of them.
