DMOZ is an open directory project .All major search engine love your site if your link coming from DMOZ. There are lots of websites derive data from DMOZ listing so it will improve your back links.
Luckily, I got all of my sites always listed in DMOZ, since hundreds of other sites used DMOZ when catalog-based directories were counted toward a valuable link-back mechanism. However, I think it is very difficult to get listed within DMOZ today. Seems like they have stopped accepting listings altogether.
Very hard to get listed in DMOZ these days. One of the big advantages of DMOZ is that the submission is done through manual approval. The down fall however is that they don't re-visit their listings (EVER). So companies and listings that existed in early 2000 still exist today.
We've tried to get one of our old companies DE-LISTED as the information posted is no longer relevant to our business - but our requests go unanswered. New companies that I've tried to list for clients are going in excess of 6 months without responses.
Still viable in that the search engines love them - but they seem to be one of those places that if you're not already listed, it'll be hard to ever get listed.
