  Old  First Camera?

I usually use my dads camera if I need to take a photo, my dads camera is quite good and takes some pretty high res shots, but I'd just like some suggestions of what camera I could get and how much I should spend on a first camera for serious photography.

Thanks

It all depends on how "serious" you want to get. If you plan on doing photography for freelance or billboard design you will need a high amount of megapix, and a high grade SLR/DSLR camera. I have a Panasonic F27z which is a step down from SLR and a year or two old, but it works lovely. I think there is the F28z out now. Good zoom at 12x and 6 mp for the 27z. Probably available for 200-300 dollars.

I do pretty serious photography. I got highly commended in Junior Landscape Photographer of the year in the UK with a Kodak DX9640 digital camera and I find it quite good because it has a wide angle lens and a 10x optical zoom.

You want to look for something with a wide lens, high resolution and a big optical zoom. If you can afford an SLR then I recommend buying one.

My first camera was a Fuji Finepix s602 Pro and it was absolutely wonderful. I took some of my best photos with that camera. I have now moved on to the newer Fuji Finepix s700 which is just as nice with a few more extras. Cost was around $300.

Maybe try a secondhand canon 10D or 20D. Usually there are lenses along with them, so you can try it out. If itdoesn't work out for you, you can probably sell it for the same amount and no harm is done.
