I agree that Canon is the way to go.

Keep in mind that using a point and shoot will give you versatility in the areas you speak of (landscape, portrait, macro (closeup)), but won't allow you do really specialize in any of those areas due to the fixed lens.

The Canon S serious is great, I have heard good things about the s1000.

The Sony T series is also said to be quite excellent.
