What should I learn?

I was wondering what should I learn? C, AJAX or RoR? I already have a RoR book but it is confusing

Well, if you don't already know PHP, learn that.

RoR is actually rather simple, and the demand is growing, but PHP is the more superior language. C is also good, but there are subsidiaries of C such as C#, C++, Visual C++, etc. So you would have to choose one to learn.

RoR will be confusing at first, but once you learn the basics, its even easier to code than PHP (or so I've heard).

I can code some php like user managment systems and etc I will prolly learn to code RoR but what is it used for?

Your best bet is to do what Andrew said, PHP is where its at.

RoR can be used for web applications. Just think of it as a new version of PHP with different features and syntax.

If i'm not mistaken, AJAX is a serverside technolagy and not a programming language. Its around using Javascript and XML, so you would need to learn one of those to use AJAX

I would carry on with PHP, Its very widly used so you can find support any where for it, and the PHP website is great place for answers and examples.

And if your looking for more of a software development language I would start off with Visual Basic as it is pretty easy to use to pick up the basics!

Okay thanks guys! I have continued with PHP, I will be posting a topic for beta testers for my User Managment System that I started November 28th.

Good decision, Xuxa. There are all sorts in PHP5 that the average coder is blissfully unaware of.

Learn PHP & JavaScript.

PHP and JavaScript would be great choices ... knowing CSS and JavaScript especially can open a lot of doors for dHTML and eventually AJAX, but AJAX does need a lot of server side coding as well. Web languages are always a good starting point, since they're so widely used and you can get into them at any level of difficulty and gradually build your knowledge.

if you're up for more in depth programming, learning Java / JSP would be a nice choice, since then you wouldn't be limited to web apps. Armed with a nice IDE like Eclipse, Java can be easy (almost fun) to write once you get wrapped around the OO mindset... Design is a lot more important with it (and any OO language) though, since there can be so many little things going on.

C is pretty hardcore, but a great language when you know it; probably not the best choice for a beginner.

Perl is another really nice option... It's really powerful (especially on Linux) and its loose syntax makes it quick and easy to write.

Python is definitely worth looking at too... gaining popularity very quickly. Next language on my own list to learn.
