I start mine at about 1200x1500 but design the site to be no wider then 960px unless specified by the client.

Design by grid fellas, it make it a lot easier.

900px x 1000px

It depends on what kindof site your making. But most of the time the bigger widths are better. Smaller screens/widths are becoming outdated.

For those of you designing for width around 950-1000 - there's a 960GS (Grid System) - http://960.gs/
Its main advantage is that 960 is divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 16, 20, 24, 30, 32, 40, 48, 60, 64, 80, 96, 120, 160, 192, 240, 320 and 480 making it a good template for grid based design.

There are two variants: 12 and 16 columns, which can be used separately or in tandem.
The 12 column grid is divided into portions that are 60 pixels wide. The 16 column grid consists of 40 pixel increments. Each column has 10 pixels of margin on the left and right, which create 20 pixel wide gutters between columns.

I do 1000x900 because the average screen size is 1024x768 and by the time you take into account the scroll bar you get about 1000 across..
